This exquisite Japanese export vase from the late Meiji or early Taisho period (c. 1900–1920) features a striking marriage of hand-painted ceramics and intricate metalwork. The baluster-form body is finished in a vibrant, glossy yellow glaze—a signature of the renowned Awaji (Minpei) kilns—and decorated with delicate hand-painted floral motifs in deep greens and rose tones.
Craftsmanship & Details
What truly distinguishes this piece is its remarkable "silver cage" or basket-weave overlay. The white metal (likely high-purity silver typical of the period) is meticulously hand-braided around the flared rim and base, with vertical bands reinforcing the body. This "Japonisme" style was highly popular in Western high-end interiors at the turn of the century and remains a favorite for modern designers looking for unique textural accents.
Condition
Excellent antique condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs to the porcelain. The metal overlay shows a light, authentic patina consistent with age, which can be polished to a high shine or left as is for a more "found" look.
