1975 Milan exhibition poster for one of Senegal's most famous artists, Amadou Seck. Comes rolled in original gallery shipping tube. Abstract figure typical of his 1970's work.
Biography:
"Born in 1950 in Dakar, Amadou Seck took courses at the National School of Arts in Dakar, from 1966 to 1974, "plastic research" section with Pierre Lods. There he developed a distinctive visual language combining African artistic traditions, mask iconography and symbolic systems with solid academic training.
In the 1970s, his work took shape through a “poetics of the mask”, drawing on Baga, Dogon, Senufo and Marka repertoires. After experimenting with raw materials (earth, charcoal, natural pigments), he gradually embraced gouache and ink, moving towards a geometric, quasi-cubist style encouraged by Pierre Soulages. This decade also marked his international emergence, with exhibitions at the Grand Palais (1974) and solo shows in Paris, Milan, Dakar, Bonn and New York.
Close to Senghor, he often represented Senegalese artists abroad. After a very productive first period, Amadou Seck moved towards other activities, leaving painting aside.
From his dazzling period in the 1980s during which he painted very important works, exhibiting all around the world, he created large works on strong cardboard where he amalgamated pigments with earth and other composite materials where it represents figures with bulky heads on atrophied bodies. His paintings made with a palette knife also have a lot of presence!
The 1980s and 1990s confirmed his international recognition, with exhibitions at WORKS II Gallery (New York, 1985), the Vasarely Foundation (1990), the Lugano Art Fair (1994), the Salon d’Automne (1994) and the Musée de Saint-Maur (1997). His powerful, inventive work remains one of the singular voices of Senegalese modernism." - Paris Africa Gallery
