This exquisite Victorian-era Aesthetic Movement silver plate set is a stunning example of late 19th-century artistry, blending naturalistic themes with intricate textures. Both the sugar bowl and creamer feature highly detailed, raised designs of ripening grapes and lush roses along the rims and spouts. The most striking feature is the sculptural bird finials perched atop the handles, adding a whimsical, nature-inspired charm.
The bodies of the vessels showcase a sophisticated contrast in finishes: approximately 70% of the surface features a soft, matte "frosted" texture, while the remaining areas are polished to a high shine. This creates a beautiful backdrop for the fine engravings of decorative fans and delicate ferns that wrap around the sides.
The number 701 is etched on both bases. The set has no maker’s mark.
MEASUREMENTS
Creamer – 6 in (15.2 cm) wide x 6 in (15.2 cm) tall.
Sugar – 7 in (17.8 cm) wide x 6 in (15.2 cm) tall.
Total weight 1 lb 4.6 oz.
CONDITION
There are no breaks, cracks, or repairs. While there are some silver losses – especially around the rims - both pieces still have much silver and still shines. Both pieces have a few brown stains on the frosted sections; They resemble coffee drips, but I was unable to remove them. The base of the creamer has a dent, which results in it wobbling.
A standout example of Aesthetic movement artistry, this set’s unique frosted texture and intricate bird handles make it a rare and whimsical addition to any silver plate collection or a beautiful centerpiece for your next tea service
