Painted steel base and white methacrylate diffuser heat-bent in several steps and in opposite directions. An iconic example of Italian radical design, the “Mezza Chimera” floor lamp was designed by Vico Magistretti in 1969 and produced by Artemide. Conceived as a sculptural light object, the model embodies the designer’s exploration of pure form, industrial materials, and soft, diffused illumination. The lamp features a sinuously curved, self-supporting shade in opaline methacrylate, formed into a vertical spiral that appears to twist upward in a continuous gesture. The fluid, organic silhouette recalls a ribbon unfurling in space, transforming a simple geometric concept into a striking sculptural presence. When illuminated, the translucent material emits a warm, atmospheric glow, evenly diffused along the entire height of the structure. The light source is concealed within, enhancing the purity of the form and creating a soft ambient effect ideal for both residential and architectural interiors. The lamp stands on a molded base and retains its original Artemide marking, reading: “Artemide – Made in Italy – Modello Mezza Chimera – Design Vico Magistretti – Patent Pending.” Vintage condition consistent with age and use. Minor surface marks and light signs of wear to the methacrylate. Electrically functional at time of cataloguing. Retains original manufacturer’s mark.
