The composition revolves entirely around an old pine tree: a substantial, twisting trunk with strongly defined grain, from which a fine network of branches unfolds. Pinecones hang among the needle clusters; the sharp, graphic “needles” are cut in faceted planes, giving the whole piece a vivid rhythm. Thanks to the layered carving, the panel reads almost like a sculpture—calm and architectural from a distance, richly detailed up close, with a beautiful play of shadow.

The panel is set in a clean, elongated frame with an attractive contrast between the warmer outer border and the lighter inner wood. This makes it feel both traditional and highly usable in a contemporary interior. As ranma are meant to do, it allows light and air to pass through while elegantly defining a threshold or zone. Today it also works beautifully as a long horizontal wall panel above a sofa or sideboard, as an accent above a doorway, or as a see-through element in an open-plan space. The carving is finished on both sides, so the panel can be displayed front or back and also works beautifully as a divider.

Condition: in good condition. Light age-related wear is present, and tiny nicks at some of the finer points are possible, but these are not distracting and are typical for this delicate openwork carving. See less
