This 25-inch carved figure is a significant example of the sculptural heritage of the Idoma people from the lower Benue River valley in Nigeria. In Idoma culture, such figures—often referred to as Anjenu—were created as shrine sculptures to act as intermediaries between the physical and spiritual worlds. These "spirit spouses" or ancestral guardians were traditionally housed in private family shrines to protect the household, ensure fertility, and bring prosperity to the lineage. Carved from a single block of indigenous hardwood, this figure showcases the distinctive "white-faced" aesthetic often found in Idoma and neighboring Igbo art. The face is adorned with kaolin clay, representing the spiritual realm, and features precise scarification marks on the cheeks and temples. The figure is depicted in a powerful, seated posture with hands resting on the knees—a traditional sign of composure, authority, and maternal strength. The torso and limbs are finished in a deep, dark historic patina, creating a striking visual contrast against the pale, painted face.
The "white-face" aesthetic makes this an incredible high-contrast piece. Instead of a standard shelf, try placing this at the end of a long hallway or on a low stone plinth to highlight its architectural silhouette. It works exceptionally well as a singular "ghostly" focal point against dark-painted walls or raw concrete textures.
