This is a stunning, authentic mid-19th-century relief-molded pitcher by the renowned T.J. & J. Mayer of the Dale Hall Pottery, Longport. This specific design, titled "Paul and Virginia," is based on the 1788 novel by Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre.
The pitcher features a vibrant cobalt blue stippled ground with high-relief white "Parian-style" figures. The scene depicts Paul carrying Virginia across a stream amidst lush tropical palm trees.
Excellent Antique Condition: No chips, cracks, or repairs. The relief molding remains very crisp and sharp. Original pewter lid is present and functional with a natural aged patina. Minor surface wear consistent with age (approx. 175 years old). There is a minor original manufacturing defect (a small firing anomaly) as shown in the final photo. This occurred during the original kiln process and is common in mid-Victorian stoneware.
