Bought from a private house sale in London's Holland Park. The desk displays the elegant neoclassical styling associated with the Sheraton revival period, combining refined proportions with delicate decorative detail. The sloping writing surface is inset with a leather panel, providing a practical area for writing or reading. The front frieze is decorated with finely executed marquetry incorporating scrolling foliate motifs in contrasting woods, demonstrating the skilled craftsmanship typical of late 19th-century cabinetmaking. One side features the traditional Davenport arrangement of graduated drawers, each fitted with decorative brass handles and providing useful storage for stationery and writing accessories. The opposite side is finished with a panelled cupboard door centred with a beautifully executed marquetry panel depicting classical foliate and urn motifs. Above the writing surface sits a raised stationery compartment with a small drawer, further embellished with delicate marquetry inlay that complements the decoration below. The desk stands on elegant tapering legs which give the piece a refined and balanced appearance in keeping with Sheraton-inspired design. Both decorative and practical, this antique Sheraton Revival Davenport desk would make a charming and functional addition to a study, library, or sitting room, combining compact proportions with elegant neoclassical craftsmanship.
