This hearth vessel … Read more This is an antique brass coal hod or ember carrier featuring a pedestal form and hand-riveted construction. This hearth vessel is fitted with curved brass swing arms terminating in turned wooden handles, designed to allow safe transport of hot coals or embers from stove to fireplace. Today we think this would be a perfect display piece, candle holder or small green plant jardinere.

The vessel displays a deep bowl form with a flared rim and pedestal base, elevating the container while in use. The interior shows authentic darkened patina consistent with age and historic use near heat or coals, while the exterior brass has developed a warm, polished glow. The exterior also shows the striations from being turned in a lathe.

Hand-riveted seams and traditional metalworking details suggest late 19th to early 20th century workshop craftsmanship. The unusual symmetrical handle design and elegant proportions give the piece a strong sculptural presence.
