I was thinking a lot about the intimacy in Mary Cassatt’s work and the way Henri Matisse used color and pattern to create warmth and rhythm within everyday scenes.

The mother stands at the center while her children gather around her—one playing guitar, the others leaning in and reaching for her. I wanted the figures to feel relaxed and natural, like a fleeting family moment you almost miss if you aren’t paying attention. The focus is really the small exchange between the mother and child, that gentle conversation that happens without needing many words.

Color and pattern play an important role here. The striped dress, the loose brushwork, and the soft coral background were inspired by the decorative quality I love in Matisse, while the subject of mother and child is very much a nod to Cassatt.

I’m always drawn to painting these quiet domestic moments—scenes that feel both personal and universal at the same time. See less
