This 20-inch tall vessel is an authentic piece of hand-coiled pottery from the Nupe people of central Nigeria. The Nupe are master potters, traditionally known for creating vessels that balance immense structural strength with delicate, rhythmic ornamentation. These large-scale pots, known as riga, were used both for practical water storage (where the porous clay kept the contents cool) and as prestigious household objects that signaled the social standing of the family. The vessel features a classic globular base that tapers into a long, ringed neck. The body is densely adorned with deeply engraved primitive motifs, featuring a series of relief-carved shields and textured geometric patterns that are characteristic of the Middle Niger region. The clay has a rich, multi-toned umber patina, showcasing the "fire clouds" and organic scorching that occur during traditional open-air pit firing. Standing at nearly 2 feet tall, its verticality and textured surface provide a powerful tactile presence.
With its 10-inch diameter and 20-inch height, this vessel is a perfect "architectural vertical" for a console table, a deep shelf, or as a floor accent. Pair it with tall, architectural branches or dried botanicals to emphasize its height, or let its intricate engravings stand alone as a piece of "earth-born" sculpture.
