This 15-inch high vessel is a classic example of the sophisticated pottery traditions of the Mangbetu people from the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Mangbetu art is celebrated for its anthropomorphic elegance, specifically the depiction of elongated craniums—a practice known as lipombo, which was a traditional sign of beauty and high social status among the ruling class. These vessels were historically used for serving palm wine or water during important communal ceremonies and royal receptions. Hand-modeled from local clay, the vessel features a globular body that transitions into a long, graceful neck topped with a stylized human head. The "upward-gazing" expression and the meticulously rendered elongated skull are hallmarks of Mangbetu royal portraiture. The surface is adorned with delicate, hand-etched geometric patterns and "raised" nodules that mimic traditional scarification or jewelry. The terracotta has aged to a beautiful, variegated earth tone, showing authentic fire clouds (dark carbon spots) from the original open-pit firing process, along with a rich, time-worn patina.
With its 12-inch diameter and 15-inch height, this vessel is a monumental piece of "functional sculpture." It serves as a powerful focal point for a large console, a kitchen island, or a pedestal in a sun-drenched entryway.
