These pieces were crafted to commemorate a wedding, a religious vow, or sometimes to preserve a bridal crown, veil, or bouquet under glass domes. The object is made of delicate metal wirework, cut and pressed floral motifs, and gilt decorative elements. The overall form resembles a throne or reliquary seat. The red, tufted velvet cushion at the center was typically used to hold symbolic items such as a wedding crown, bridal wreath, or religious medals. The condition of the textile shows significant age, with wear consistent with 19th-century fabric. The surrounding small mirrors, now oxidized and showing loss of silvering, were often included to symbolize purity, eternity, and divine reflection. Painted floral decorations on some mirrors confirm its decorative and symbolic function. At the crest, a bird (likely a dove, symbol of the Holy Spirit or peace) carries a branch in its beak, reinforcing the religious and nuptial symbolism. The piece rests on a black lacquered wooden base, which would have originally been covered by a protective glass dome (common in such displays). These devotional and matrimonial displays were popular in France and Italy between 1850 and 1900. They were often preserved in family homes as heirlooms, treasured reminders of faith and significant family events. The combination of religious symbolism (the dove, floral motifs, sacred imagery) with personal commemoration (bridal cushion, mirrors) reflects a blending of domestic devotion and family memory. Today, such pieces are valued both as devotional folk art and as part of the decorative arts of the 19th century. See less
