While Matryoshka dolls usually have a mother as the biggest piece and her family in smaller sizes, there are a rare few that were made by artists and not by Russian factories. Beginning in 1991, artists had the freedom to make their own, no longer stamped USSR but signed by the artist.

Styled after Disney characters from the 1950s, this set was made by an artist in Russia in 1994. This piece is considered a signed artist piece, which was hand turned and hand painted with a “folk art” look to them, in colors with matte finishes. In this set, it is easy to identify the characters, though the image of Pluto could easily pass for Scooby Doo too, and that brings a smile to the face.

This set of dolls includes:
- Mickey in a blue suit with red bow tie and cummerbund, 6” tall by 3” round at base and 3.25” at its widest
-Minnie Mouse, 4.5” tall by 1.75” at base, in blue and red against a mustard yellow background.
- The Apprentice from Fantasia, 3” tall by 1.75” wide in red robe and blue hat with stars.
-Mini Minnie, 2” tall by .75” round at base, wearing yellow and red against a green background.
-Pluto, 1.25” tall by 0.5” at base. This is the smallest piece and does not open up. See less
