Writing table designed by Jan de Jong for Nursing Home De Weerde, Eindhoven, The Netherlands, 1966. This small writing table perfectly captures the essence of Bossche School design in its most modest and functional form. It is constructed from cedar wood and finished in the characteristic green varnish associated with many interiors of the movement. Unlike other surviving pieces, this table has retained its original finish, revealing a rich and authentic surface with the subtle sheen of carefully aged varnish. The visible iron nails are rhythmically placed and form a clear architectural line, enhancing the structure and proportion of the piece without distracting from its simplicity. The table’s proportions follow the plastic number, resulting in a balanced and quietly powerful object. The robust sides and solid top are visually connected by precise horizontal lines that mirror the architectural logic of the Bossche School. Originally made for a nursing home chapel and its surrounding spaces, this table was designed as a functional writing or reading piece, though its clarity of form allows it to sit effortlessly in any interior. Its honest construction and original finish make it an especially rare example of De Jong’s furniture work. Jan de Jong is considered one of the most important executors of the Bossche School, with a vast oeuvre spanning full buildings, interior spaces, large-scale renovations and consultancy work. His practice was rooted in a close collaboration with Dom Hans van der Laan and Wim van Hoof, whose work with color and proportion shaped some of the most refined examples of modernist architecture in the Netherlands.
