The Rex chair, designed by Niko Kralj for Stol Kamnik, is considered one of the most important design classics from Slovenia and the former Yugoslavia. Kralj designed the chair in the 1950s, a period in which functionality, affordability, and mass production were central to modern furniture design. With the Rex, he managed to combine these principles in an exceptionally elegant way. The chair is constructed as a light, foldable wooden structure with a recognizable slatted seat and backrest. Thanks to its clever folding mechanism, it can be easily folded up and stored compactly, without unsightly metal hinges dominating the design.
The Rex was usually made from curved beech wood and/or plywood, as is the case with this example, materials that offer both strength and comfort. The slightly springy slats ensure a comfortable seat, while the design reveals subtle ergonomics. What makes the Rex special is the combination of simplicity and technical inventiveness. The chair looks minimalist, but its construction is well thought out and efficient. The design received widespread international recognition. A copy of the Rex chair is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, which underlines its cultural and historical value. Over the decades, this model has remained timeless, which testifies to both the popularity and durability of the design. Today, the Rex chair is considered an icon of mid-century modern design. It fits effortlessly into interiors where functionality, craftsmanship, and timeless simplicity come together. More than seventy years after its creation, Kralj's design remains surprisingly contemporary. This piece is ready for immediate use and has its own unique character and patina, a piece with soul and a real mood maker!
