The gold-toned backdrop enhances the ceremonial presence of the piece.

Dimensions: height 45.5 cm, width 47.5 cm, depth 29 cm.

The figure wears richly layered brocade textiles in orange, gold and deep brown. He holds a kabuto helmet, a spear/lance is included, and a katana is fixed at his side. Together these attributes evoke protection and warrior honour, characteristic of this type of seasonal display.

The wooden name plaque reads “First Battle” (Hatsujin), a theme often associated with a first major step or rite of passage. The dynamic stance and focused expression give the figure a strong presence within the case.

Traditionally, this type of doll belongs to Gogatsu-ningyō (also known as musha ningyō), displayed around 5 May (Tango no Sekku, now Children’s Day) as a wish for children’s strength, health and protection. A handwritten dedication on the back is dated Shōwa 55, corresponding to 1980.

Condition is very good; the doll, textiles and case are well preserved with only light, age-related traces. See less
