artist: Jean de Paleologu (aka. Pal) (1855 - 1942)
printer: Paul Dupont, Paris
About the artist:
Romanian-born artist from Bucharest who painted under the name Julius Price while living in England where he trains. It was when he moved to Paris that he changed to Pal. He created numerous illustrations from 1893-1900 and is best known for his depictions of voluptuous women. Charles Matlack Price said that "Pal's idea was to make drawings of a nature more commercial than those of Cheret, yet no less artistic. He was also the only designer at the time, except Cheret, who understood the technique of lithography, and was able to put his own touches on the stone".
"The Olympia opened in Paris in April 1893 as the first establishment to call itself a music hall. From the start, the Olympia exploited feminine allure for all it was worth whatever its various revues were called, they always featured beautiful girls in revealing costumes. Pal, freshly arrived from London, was a perfect choice to create one of Olympia's first show posters."
