Chinese pin-ups, known as Shanghai Girls, emerged from 1920s- 1940s advertising, blending Art Deco style with modern Chinese fashion (like the qipao) to create glamorous figures for products like cigarettes, symbolizing urban sophistication and a burgeoning consumer culture before political shifts halted their production. While ancient Chinese art featured beautiful women, the distinct, commercially-driven pin-up culture of this era reflected Shanghai's unique "sin city" atmosphere, a vibrant mix of capitalism and culture, distinct from Western pin-ups but serving similar roles in popular appeal. Shangai Girl posters are iconic examples of early Chinese commercial art, showcasing a unique blend of Eastern aesthetics and Western modernity.

This poster comes from the private collection of a noted author, collector and lecturer who has travelled widely in China and around the world. His poster collection is massive, and his knowledge quite legendary. e recently put together an exhibition of Chinese posters which was shown in national museums in Canada, France and Italy and we are pleased and proud to have been asked to sell his posters.
