Large 11.5” 19th C. Chinese Blue & White Porcelain Censer Bowl
This substantial porcelain censer is a premier example of Late Qing Dynasty blue and white ware. Measuring an impressive 11.5 inches in diameter, the vessel features a wide, flat rim and a deep, rounded body designed for ritual incense use.
The exterior is hand-painted in a rich, "heaped and piled" style of underglaze cobalt blue. The decorative program includes a sophisticated Greek Key (fret) border at the shoulder, followed by a wide band of stylized floral scrolls and a rhythmic chevron pattern at the base. The interior displays a creamy, blue-tinted white glaze with authentic kiln artifacts and pinpricks, while the unglazed base shows the characteristic iron spotting and "chatter marks" of 19th-century hand-finishing.
Historical Significance
Originally utilized as a Scholar’s Object or ritual incense burner, this piece represents the transition between traditional Imperial styles and the robust Export wares of the 1800s. Its scale and classical Chinoiserie aesthetic make it a highly versatile "Grandmillennial" statement piece.

Condition
Very Good Antique Condition. The porcelain is structurally sound with no large chips or structural cracks. Consistent with its 19th-century age, there are minor original glaze skips, surface pitting from the firing process, and light age-appropriate shelf wear to the unglazed footrim. A singular, small glaze-level nick is present on the outer rim.
Whether used as a sophisticated planter, a centerpiece bowl, or a focal point on a library shelf, this authentic 19th-century censer brings timeless historical gravity and artisanal craftsmanship to any curated interior.
