Designed by Jan Brunott (1889–1951), one of the refined voices within the Hague School tradition, this armchair embodies the Dutch Art Deco translation of Modernism in the 1920s. Where the Amsterdam School sculpted, Brunott calibrated. Where others curved, he squared the line.
The construction is highly geometric: four robust uprights, a rectilinear frame, and a backrest articulated by three vertical slats flanking a central panel. The composition is architectural, like a miniature façade reduced to human scale. The subtle blackened details at the feet and beneath the seat rail provide a restrained contrast, a hallmark of Brunott’s vocabulary. They function as visual punctuation, grounding the warm oak with a graphic baseline.
The proportions are deliberate. The arms extend in a horizontal gesture that feels confident yet controlled. The stance is solid, nearly cubic, but lightened by the open back and the linear stretcher construction. The original design intent is unmistakable: clarity, balance, and structural honesty.
Executed in oak, the surface displays a warm, honeyed patina that interacts beautifully with light, revealing the grain as a decorative element. The seat has been recently upholstered in a black ribbed fabric that complements the blackened accents and enhances the chair’s architectural silhouette without disturbing its integrity.
Chairs by Jan Brunott are scarce. His work sits at an important intersection in Dutch design history. A chair not merely to sit in, but to contemplate. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs,
designer records,
or other literature sources and take full responsibility for any authenticity issues arising
