The cabinet is constructed from cedar, a common furniture wood in China, for its durability and its aroma which was an insect repellent, therefore is used for storing clothing, textiles, and other personal items. The simple yet elegant design with metal hardware and raised panel doors with beaded edges reflects the Ming influenced aesthetic that remained popular throughout the 19th century. See less

The original red lacquer finish was scrapped off, leaving parallel lines running from top to bottom, creating an unusual effect, of almost parallel lines of uneven size. The cabinet is simple but elegant in its way. The construction lacks the sophistication of other furniture, yet it has a certain charm none the less. less
