Pair of Mid-Century Japanese Gilt Ceramic Grapevine Candle Holders – Raised “JAPAN” Export Mark, c.1955–1965
Mobile-Ready Description
A charming pair of mid-century Japanese gilt ceramic candle holders featuring a sculptural grapevine motif and original raised “JAPAN” export mark on the underside. Produced during the postwar export boom of the 1950s–1960s, these decorative pieces retain a beautifully aged gold finish and authentic vintage patina.
Full Description
This distinctive pair of mid-century decorative candle holders showcases a richly textured grapevine motif cast in ceramic and finished in a warm gilt tone. Clusters of grapes and curling leaves wrap around the bodies of the holders, giving them a sculptural quality and a charming Old-World decorative presence.
The underside of each piece features a raised “JAPAN” export mark molded directly into the ceramic body during the manufacturing process. Unlike ink stamps or applied labels, this mark was incorporated into the mold itself and fired in the kiln along with the piece. This method was commonly used by Japanese manufacturers producing decorative ceramics for export to the United States during the mid-20th century, particularly from the 1950s through the mid-1960s.
Following World War II, Japan became one of the primary suppliers of decorative household goods to the American market. Small ornamental pieces such as candle holders, vases, figurines, and centerpieces were produced in large quantities for department stores and gift shops across the United States. To comply with import regulations, many pieces were marked simply “JAPAN,” either stamped, printed, or—as seen here—molded in raised lettering directly into the ceramic body.
The small central hole visible on the underside is a manufacturing kiln vent used during the casting process. When ceramic slip was poured into the mold, this vent allowed trapped air to escape and ensured even firing in the kiln. This is a typical characteristic of mid-century molded ceramics and confirms the original production technique.
The aged gilt finish shows attractive wear and natural patina consistent with age and use, adding warmth and character to the pieces. Their compact scale and sculptural grapevine design make them ideal accents for a mantel, dining table, console, or bookshelf, and they pair beautifully with traditional, Mediterranean, or Hollywood Regency interiors.

The bodies feature a sculptural grapevine relief with clusters of grapes and leaves molded into the ceramic, and the raised decorative details remain crisp and well defined. The original gold-tone finish shows areas of natural patina, particularly along the raised surfaces and edges of the relief where the gilt has gently worn through to reveal the underlying ceramic tone. Most notably, the top surfaces where candles would have rested show visible patina, surface wear, and discoloration from prior candle use. Evidence of historic candle wax contact and heat exposure has softened portions of the gilt finish on these upper surfaces, creating a darker aged tone and minor surface texture variations consistent with authentic use as candle holders. The bases display the original raised “JAPAN” export marks molded directly into the ceramic body, a production feature characteristic of mid-century Japanese export ceramics. The central hole visible on the underside is a manufacturing kiln vent from the casting process, not a functional candle socket, and is typical for molded ceramic decorative objects of this period. Additional minor signs of age include small scuffs, surface scratches, and areas of finish wear around the lower edges and base rims, all consistent with normal handling and shelf wear over time. No structural cracks were observed. Overall, the pair presents attractively with a warm aged patina that highlights their vintage character and mid-century origin. less
