Monumental Flora: Pair of Vintage Blue & White Tulip Vase Pyramids
Chinese
This spectacular pair of vintage porcelain tulipières (or pyramid vases) is dramatically potted in the classic tiered obelisk form and decorated in the traditional underglaze blue and white "Blue Onion" pattern.
Designed for grand floral displays, each towering vase is ingeniously constructed from four separate, interconnecting pieces. The base supports a hollow central cavity designed to hold a shared water reservoir, while the rising tiers are pierced with twenty-four individual openings (or spouts) intended to support single flower stems, particularly tulips.
Measurements:
Height: 31 1/4 inches (79.4 cm)
Base Dimensions: 8 3/4 inches square (22.2 cm)
Historical Context: The Dutch Golden Age & The Tulipiere
Tulip vase pyramids—also known as flower pyramids or tulipières—are elaborate, multi-tiered ceramic structures designed specifically for the display of prized cut flowers. Emerging from the Netherlands during the opulent Dutch Golden Age in the late 17th century, these unique vases were much more than mere floral containers; they were a captivating fusion of artistry, social status, and horticultural passion.
The popularity of the tulip vase pyramid is inextricably linked to the patronage of Queen Mary II of England. Alongside her Dutch husband, William of Orange, she brought a fervent love for both gardens and Dutch decorative arts to the English court. During their reign, these towering ceramic creations became a fashionable accessory in the grandest homes. The cost of the vases themselves—often intricately hand-painted Delftware—combined with the expense of the exotic flowers they held, made them an undeniable statement of immense prosperity.
These vessels continue to captivate modern design enthusiasts and historians alike. As noted in the April 15, 2025 Financial Times article "Tulipieres for spring: still groundbreaking," and highlighted by lifestyle experts like Martha Stewart, the architectural impact of the tulipière remains unmatched. They are also frequently the subject of major academic exhibitions, such as The Gorgeous Nothings: Flowers at Chatsworth, which featured twelve spectacular Delft tulipières (ranging up to a meter tall) ordered by the first Duke of Devonshire from The Greek A factory—the very same factory patronized by Queen Mary II.
