The Emerald Court: A Late 19th Century Persian Sultanabad Masterpiece of Opulence
Woven during the Late 19th Century, this hand knotted wool antique Persian Sultanabad rug reflects the refined grandeur of the celebrated weaving workshops surrounding Arak during the Qajar period. Its magnificent forest green field, enriched by gentle waves of abrash, glows with depth and movement, evoking the lush gardens and cultivated landscapes that inspired Persian artistic tradition. Such verdant palettes are treasured among collectors for their rarity, lending the carpet a distinctive presence that feels both regal and timeless.
At the heart of the exceptional composition stretches an elongated red medallion embellished with rosettes and finely rendered botanical elements. The medallion’s elegant contours are framed by flowing acanthus vinery, from which jewel-like cartouches, luminous teardrop forms, and delicate rosettes descend along the vertical axis. These enigmatic motifs create a ceremonial rhythm that guides the eye through the composition with effortless harmony. Surrounding the medallion, feathery boteh motifs alternate gracefully with blossoming rosettes and curling arabesque scrolls, weaving a poetic tableau of life, growth, and renewal.
Across the striated green field, delicate floating florals, eight-point stars, and iconic tribal symbols appear like scattered constellations. Their relaxed, painterly spacing is a hallmark of early Sultanabad artistry, where master weavers balanced symmetry with fluid expression. The result is an extraordinary masterpiece that feels animated and organic, as though a flourishing garden has been translated into wool and dye with remarkable intuition and grace.
Framing this verdant creation is a magnificent Samovar turtle vine scroll border, its scrolling vinery and stylized palmettes unfolding with stately rhythm. Flanked by floral meander guard borders, the layered enclosure creates a refined architectural framework characteristic of carpets woven for prestigious Western export houses such as Ziegler & Co. In a distinguished interior, this exquisite work of art becomes a statement of cultivated taste and connoisseurship—an heirloom of cultural significance whose rare palette, historic pedigree, and masterful design evoke the enduring prestige of Persian craftsmanship.
