37"W x 30"H Excellent Condition, Lithograph in colors on smooth paper, Unframed.
This rare and highly collectible original exhibition poster was produced for David Hockney’s Retrospective at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1988, marking the artist’s 50th birthday. A premium-quality color lithograph printed on fine smooth paper, it features Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) 1972. Immediately recognizable as one of Hockney’s most iconic and beloved works, it has appeared on the cover of numerous monographs, auction & exhibition catalogues, and is even the subject of a film, Jack Hazan's 1973 A Bigger Splash. In 2018 its significance was further underscored when it achieved a world record auction price for a living artist at Christie's. Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) has certainly become one of the most celebrated images of the post-war period. This original vintage poster of the work from the 1988 landmark retrospective exhibition held on the artist's 50th birthday has become a prized collectible.
