Part of June Hastings’ “Collected Country House” — a curated grouping exploring layered English and American country interiors.
A sculptural American folk art table lamp constructed using hundreds of carefully applied matchsticks arranged in geometric patterns across a carved wooden form. This lamp reflects a tradition of handmade decorative craft popular in American homes during the 1950s and 1960s. The faceted base is built in dramatic architectural layers, culminating in a bold five-point star motif that is echoed in the custom matchstick shade.
When illuminated, light radiates through the star cutout, creating a warm halo effect that highlights the intricate matchstick mosaic work. The rhythmic patterns and angular form give the piece a distinctly sculptural presence even when unlit. Both playful and highly graphic, it functions as both lighting and folk art object—equally compelling on a side table, console, or in a cabin or collected interior.
COLLECTOR'S NOTE
Matchstick craft developed in the United States as a mid-century hobby tradition related to earlier tramp art techniques. Instead of chip-carved cigar boxes, matchsticks or thin wood slivers were used to create repeating geometric surfaces and decorative patterns. Lamps such as this were often made by skilled hobbyists and reflect a distinctly American tradition of inventive, handmade decorative arts.
The star motif—long associated with American folk symbolism—adds a patriotic and architectural character rarely seen in more common matchstick objects.

Good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear consistent with handmade folk art construction. Minor surface wear and small areas of separation typical of matchstick craft. The shade rests on two original wooden support rails as designed. A small amount of museum putty has been used previously to help keep the shade securely positioned and can be easily removed if desired. Due to the handmade nature of the piece, the lamp may appear to lean slightly depending on the surface on which it is placed; this can be easily corrected with small felt pads beneath the base. Presents beautifully when illuminated.
