A highly decorative and scenic pair of venetian parade armchairs, finely carved in patinated dark walnut by the atelier of valentino panciera, known as besarèl, one of the most celebrated italian wood sculptors of the nineteenth century and the acknowledged heir to the great venetian carving tradition of andrea brustolon.
designed as ceremonial seating rather than everyday furniture, these armchairs were conceived to enhance prestigious interiors and spaces of representation. Their strong sculptural character and theatrical presence make them particularly suitable for an important residence, a grand salon, or an interior where furniture is intended to create visual impact and architectural rhythm.
the upright backrests, crowned by a gently curved crest, convey elegance and authority. The armrests are supported by finely carved female figures dressed in elaborate period garments, executed with remarkable plasticity and expressive detail. Additional vestal figures carved fully in the round sustain the structure, transforming the chairs into true sculptural compositions rather than simple seating.
the turned and chiselled legs are connected by a central stretcher enriched with volutes and a stylised lily motif, a decorative vocabulary typical of the besarèl workshop. The carving dominates the structure, reflecting the artist’s approach in which sculpture becomes the defining element of the furniture.
the later upholstery, in green and pale-yellow floral fabric, remains in excellent condition and harmonises beautifully with the warm patina of the walnut.
comparative examples
comparable armchairs produced by the besarèl atelier are preserved at the palazzo del quirinale in rome, where a set commissioned in 1888 furnished the royal apartments prepared for kaiser wilhelm i. These examples confirm the representative and ceremonial function of this model.
perfect for collectors and interior designers seeking statement pieces with strong historical character, this pair embodies the refined craftsmanship and theatrical elegance of late nineteenth-century venetian decorative arts.
