This is an original lithograph from the album, "The Art of Japanese Flower Arrangements" published in 1956. Ikebana is a centuries-old Japanese tradition or arranging flowers that dates back to the 7th century. It focuses on making flowers come "alive" using flowers, greenery and flora to create emotion in the viewer. This image was illustrated by Tatsushi Higuchi; his signature red ink stamp is in lower right. The floral plate is accompanied by a tissue paper insert which offers commentary both in Japanese and English on how to arrange the floral designs. The arrangement broke with tradition of Japanese design. Previously, flower arrangements were carried out in strict conformity with classic rules of structure. Following WWII, floral arrangements allowed for boundless creative self-expression.
The print has an unusual quality. Set against an olive tone background, the lithograph showcases a cypress variety green foliage with calla lily, carnations, and sweet peas. The beauty of the flowers are in the forefront set against the background of the greenery thus enhancing the beauty of color. The color is vivid and quite exquisite! The lithograph is in horizontal format (RARE). It measures 13.5 x 10 inches. Please see companion Japanese floral designs offered in our shop.
