Circa 1800-1830, American pine utensil carrier retaining layered green and cream paint. Constructed of wide boards secured with early square-cut nails, the form features a pierced center handle with hand-shaped scrolled returns and an applied molded base — a refinement that sets it apart from purely utilitarian examples. The proportions are compact and well balanced for tabletop or shelf display.
A dark green ground emerges beneath an early cream overpaint, now worn to a dry, stable craquelure consistent with age and use. Interior wear and oxidation are appropriate to the period.
In a room, it functions easily on a kitchen island, console, or shelf — practical, but visually resolved enough to stand on its own. This is an early American form whose character deepens rather than fades with time.

COLLECTOR'S NOTE
Utensil carriers such as this were used in late 18th and early 19th century New England homes to transport knives and serving implements between kitchen and table. Examples retaining layered paint history and honest wear are increasingly difficult to find in stable condition.
