The Skinny
This is the kind of pitcher that earns its place on a shelf. Hand-thrown studio pottery with a saturated turquoise base, periwinkle upper glaze, and a moody oxblood band that feels very 1980s art pottery in the best way. Sculptural, substantial, and beautifully imperfect — with one honest glaze loss noted below.
More Details
There’s something deeply satisfying about a piece that was clearly made by hand — you can see it in the throwing lines inside the neck, the slight asymmetry at the lip, and the way the glaze breaks differently over the curves.
The lower half carries a matte, speckled turquoise glaze that reads coastal but grounded — not beachy, not precious. Just strong color. The upper half shifts to a soft periwinkle blue, divided by a rich oxblood band that bleeds organically between the two. That transitional line is where the magic is — very studio, very kiln-driven, very much of its era.
The incised decorative motif on the front — subtle linear carving — gives it just enough detail without tipping into decorative fussiness. This is modern rustic. Collected. Quietly artistic.
The base is unglazed with visible wheel marks and what appears to be an impressed or wiped maker’s mark (abstract form). While I cannot attribute it definitively, this is consistent with American studio pottery from the late 20th century. Measures 9.25” tall, 6” wide including handle, and 4” deep at the belly.
Condition
Good vintage condition overall. There is one area of glaze loss on the turquoise body (shown clearly in photos). This is not a surface scuff — the glaze has worn or chipped through to the clay body beneath. It does not affect structural integrity, but it is visible and should be expected as part of the piece’s story. No cracks observed. Interior glaze is glossy and intact. Minor shelf wear to the unglazed foot consistent with age.
