Late Qing Dynasty Chinese Porcelain Scholar’s Seal Block – Iron Red Horses – “Ma Dao Cheng Gong” – Imperial Mark – 19th Century
China, Late 19th Century (Guangxu Period)
Auspicious Horse Motif – “Ma Dao Cheng Gong”
An exceptional late Qing dynasty porcelain scholar’s seal-form cube, finely hand-painted with spirited horses in rich iron-red enamel with delicate grisaille shading.
The top panel bears the celebrated Chinese idiom:
马到成功 — “Success Arrives at Once.”
In Chinese culture, the horse symbolizes power, status, endurance, and swift achievement. The phrase “Ma Dao Cheng Gong” has long conveyed immediate success in business, career advancement, and scholarly pursuits.
This is a deeply auspicious decorative theme — highly desirable among collectors of symbolic Chinese works of art.
✒️ Poetic Calligraphy & Literati Tradition
One side features a vertical poetic inscription in traditional calligraphy, praising artistic refinement and harmonious coloration, concluding with a comparison to precious jade — the most revered material in Chinese culture.
The integration of poetry, painting, and symbolism reflects the cultivated aesthetics of the Qing scholar’s studio (wenfang tradition), where objects served intellectual and aspirational purposes beyond decoration.
️ Scholar’s Studio Object – Imperial Inscription
Formed as a perfectly proportioned cube, this piece likely functioned as a scholar’s desk ornament or symbolic seal block.
Scholar objects were designed to communicate:
Refinement
Education
Status
Cultural sophistication
The top panel is framed by a green key-fret (leiwen) border — a classical motif representing continuity and longevity.
The sides bear the characters “御制” (“Made by Imperial Order”), an honorific mark frequently seen on refined Qing decorative works.
Compact yet sculptural, the form has strong architectural presence and displays beautifully.

Western collection history adds an additional layer of credibility and connoisseur appeal.
