The piece is crafted from a combination of solid wood and decorative veneers, a common construction method in Victorian furniture that allowed cabinetmakers to showcase beautiful wood grain while maintaining structural strength. The upper backboard is crowned with an ornate hand-carved lion crest, framed by scrolling foliate carvings and a shaped pediment.
