Part of June Hastings’ “Collected Country House” — a curated grouping exploring layered English and American country interiors.
An early 19th-century English chestnut drop-leaf dining table raised on five fluted and turned legs terminating in original brass castors. The form opens from a compact console profile to a generous oval capable of seating eight comfortably.
The plank top displays beautiful grain variation and natural tonal movement, consistent with well-aged chestnut. Three removable leaves (11.5" each) extend the table to 90 inches, allowing it to transition easily from intimate daily use to larger gatherings.
With leaves down, the table rests at just 27 inches deep — a practical wall position for smaller rooms. Opened partially or fully, it becomes a true dining surface with presence and warmth.
Its proportions allow it to work seamlessly in farmhouse interiors, but the turned legs and oval silhouette also sit comfortably within French Country or restrained traditional settings.
A versatile early 19th-century table that feels authentic rather than decorative.

JUNE’S THOUGHTS
What I respond to most about this table is its scale flexibility.
- Closed, it behaves almost like a console, restrained and practical.
- Opened fully, it has the confidence of a proper dining table.
That transformation is what makes early English drop-leaf forms so enduring. They were built for real households, not showrooms. This one carries that same quiet practicality — something that designers instinctively recognize.
