Solomon " Sol " LeWitt ( 1928 - 2007 ) was an American artist of a Russian Jewish background, linked to various movements, including Conceptual Art and Minimalism. LeWitt came to fame in the late 1960's with his Wall Drawings and " Structures " but was prolific in a wide range of mediums including drawing, printmaking, photography, painting, installation, and artist's books. Artworks by LeWitt have been the subject of hundreds of solo exhibitions in many of the most prestigious museums and galleries around the world since 1965.
One of the most important American artists of The 20th Century, Sol LeWitt spent decades creating artworks that explore the potential ideas for making visual forms. He transformed these ideas into0 objects of exquisite beauty and elegance, deliberately introducing elements of chance and intuition into the creation of his works. His delicate balancing act between thought and form, between order and disorder, between authorship and anonymity, has exerted an enormous influence on artists of subsequent generations.
The Lincoln Center Poster Collection and The Albert A. List Foundation began a creative program in 1962 of special posters works of art commissioned for festivals and special events at Lincoln Center for The Performing Arts in New York City. The fine art posters have heralded the opening of each theater building at Lincoln Center, and for such festivals as Mostly Mozart, Newport Jazz, and The New York Film Festival.
The Lincoln Center Poster Program has collaborated with the most admired and respected top Contemporary artists of our time collaborating together to create artworks that have become highly desirable and award winning works of art in their own right. Many of the posters have been exhibited internationally and are included in the archive collection of important museums worldwide. An example of this Sol LeWitt 1998 Mostly Mozart Festival poster is held in the archive of The Museum of Modern Art, New York.
This Sol LeWitt image was commissioned by Lincoln Center to promote The Mostly Mozart Festival in 1998. It is not surprising that he created this artwork, because LeWitt was a great fan of Classical Music, and often compared himself to a composer, in that he wrote scores that others performed. The black horizontal lines in this work resemble lines in sheet music. In fact, he collected the musical scores of friends like Phillip Glass and Steve Reich.
This composition is one of his most overtly musical works in its conception. The staff lines and notation, the musical colors and tempos, repetitions, all seem to reflect a type of rhythm and movement. LeWitt saw this Lincoln Center work as breakthrough, ushering in brighter colors and more curvilinear forms. It is as if the music of Mozart had entered into his art as a collaborator.
