This rare Original poster was produced on the occasion of a fascinating landmark exhibition Jasper Johns + Edvard Munch held at the Munch Museum in Oslo in the summer of 2016. Conceived and curated by John B. Ravenal of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in partnership with the Munch Museum, the exhibition explored the connections between the two masters. The centerpiece of this connection is the work featured on this poster: Munch’s haunting final Self-Portrait Between the Clock and the Bed, in which the aging artist stands sentinel between a handless grandfather clock and a bed, behind him, his artistic legacy glows in a radiant yellow. A friend of Johns, struck by the resemblance between the bedspread’s pattern and Johns’ crosshatch paintings of the 1970s, sent him a postcard of the image. Though the similarity was coincidental, Johns subsequently chose to engage it directly, creating a series of six monumental crosshatch paintings all titled Between the Clock and the Bed. At a pivotal moment in the middle of his career, Johns found renewed direction through this engagement with the great Norwegian Expressionist master. Moving from his earlier emotionally detached depictions of everyday objects, signs, numbers, and letters, Johns began to explore more personal and universal themes: love, loss, mortality, existential reflection, and the cycles of life. This poster is a quality color lithograph printed on fine, smooth paper. Produced exclusively for the museum exhibition, it was available only during the show, making it a very rare collector’s piece.
