The finish on the top is worn off with scratches and pits. The wear resulted from usage in a Chinese home with a kang, a brick platform built inside the house, perhaps the only warm place, the heat came from fuel burnt underneath it . Coals and firewood were fed from the outside, so there is no actual flame. That explains why it is so short, because this cabinet was not placed on the floor but raised. The long table top allowed room for writing, or eating and the cabinet below held personal items. The red color also is meaningful. Red is a good luck color and also a color for weddings. This piece of furniture could have been part of a trousseau at one time.

This was especially selected when shabby chic was so popular at the turn of the 21st century. Furniture with original patina was highly desirable then. Its look blends in with country living. The best use for it is under a sunny window for plants or seating. See less
