Folk sailor blessing verses fully preserved on the vessel read “from Rocks & Sands And every ill May God preserve The Sailor still” and “We sailors are born for all weathers, Great guns let them blow high or low, Our duty keeps us in our tethers, And where the gale drives we must go”, reflecting the devotional seafaring culture of early 19th-century Sunderland.

The monumental scale distinguishes this example from standard domestic Sunderland jugs and represents a true rarity. Subtle glaze craquelure is age-appropriate and the lustre remains vibrant and attractive.
