Crafted around 1897, the dish features a striking trompe l’oeil design: three-dimensional walnuts and a nutcracker set atop a richly glazed, leaf-shaped plate. The lifelike detail gives the illusion that the objects are resting on the dish—or about to roll off.

A larger version of this design, bearing the same British Registry number (Rd. 295659), is part of the Victoria and Albert Museum’s ceramics collection, where it is described as a molded and painted earthenware dish from Woodville, Derbyshire.

This piece reflects the Arts & Crafts and trompe l’oeil styles that were popular in late 19th-century decorative ceramics. The dish is clearly marked with an impressed BRETBY under a sunrise and Rd. 295659, the British Registry number for 1897, and additional impressed codes.
