This remarkable English Victorian pewter tankard is an exceptional example of late 19th-century sporting presentation ware, distinguished by its rare triple-handle form and substantial, trophy-like presence. Crafted in solid pewter, the tankard features three boldly sculpted handles with elegant scroll terminals, giving the piece both visual drama and excellent balance. The architectural form and impressive weight clearly indicate it was intended as a commemorative prize, rather than an everyday drinking vessel.
The front is finely engraved with a rowing trophy presentation for the Corpus Christi College Boat Club, referencing a Trial Eights competition dated 1881. During the Victorian era, rowing held a central place in collegiate life at Oxford and Cambridge, and clubs frequently commissioned pewter tankards such as this to mark significant races and achievements. These presentation vessels symbolized discipline, camaraderie, and sporting excellence, and were proudly displayed in college halls, boathouses, and the private studies of former oarsmen. Each side has an engraving, one for the event/date, the college's illustrated coat of arms, and finally the list of names of the crew.
Measuring approximately 7 inches high, 8.5 inches wide, and 7 inches deep, and weighing an impressive 3 pounds, this tankard has a commanding presence that translates beautifully as decorative home décor today. Produced by and stamped James Dixon and Sons. A particularly striking feature is the cranberry glass base, inset into the bottom of the tankard and decorated with a crisp starburst pattern. Good antique condition with dark untouched aged patina to the pewter. There are two large cracks and chips to the bottom glass. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
It is ideal for display in a study, library, bar shelf, or Ralph Lauren–inspired interior, and will appeal to collectors of rowing memorabilia, Victorian sporting trophies, and distinctive English antiques. Both historically meaningful and visually striking, this is a rare surviving example of collegiate rowing heritage preserved in pewter and glass.
