A refined and luminous example of late 19th-century Meiji period Satsuma ware, this small but powerful plate embodies the exquisite balance of delicacy and drama for which Japanese export porcelain became celebrated.
The finely crackled ivory ground (intentional Satsuma glaze crackle) serves as a quiet field upon which a richly detailed mountainous temple landscape unfolds. Tiered pagoda architecture rises among misted hills and pine trees, while three elegantly dressed figures gather near a cascading waterfall below. The composition draws the eye diagonally across the surface, creating remarkable spatial depth within an intimate scale.
Raised gilt outlines (moriage) articulate rooftops, foliage, rock formations, and garments with exceptional precision. Soft celadon washes, aubergine accents, and matte gold tracery interact beautifully with shifting light — a quality best appreciated through multiple viewing angles.
A delicate gilt monogram or cipher motif (appearing as intertwined letters, possibly “S V R”) floats above the landscape, adding an additional layer of decorative intrigue and suggesting potential export or commissioned origins.
The black and gilt geometric rim border provides bold contrast and architectural framing to the narrative scene.
Underside bears a gold-on-black square workshop mark (Kōten kiln attribution), consistent with late Meiji period Satsuma production.
