The form, defined by soft flowing curves and rounded contours, is distinguished by an exceptional balance between sculptural presence and visual lightness. The master glassmakers succeeded in transforming a substantial block of crystal into a delicate, almost ethereal form, achieved through hot-working techniques involving torsion, hand-shaping with tongs, and traditional tools. An original label affixed to the piece identifies the manufacturer and allows this sophisticated centerpiece to be dated between 1965 and 1968. It was produced by the renowned Vannes-le-Châtel crystalworks, located in the homonymous town in Lorraine, within the Grand Est region—historically one of France’s most important centers for crystal and artistic glass production. The origins of the Vannes crystalworks date back to around 1765, under aristocratic patronage. From its earliest years, it established itself as one of France’s leading glass producers, initially specializing in tableware before expanding, from the 1930s onward, into ornamental and decorative works. In 1963, the manufactory began producing decorative lead crystal, reaching the height of its artistic and technical achievement during the 1960s and 1970s. Subsequently, the Vannes glassworks became the Compagnie Française du Cristal (CFC) and later integrated Daum under the name CFC Daum. Nevertheless, the prestigious pieces produced during this period—despite their exceptional quality—were not signed Daum, but continued to be identified as Vannes productions, as is the case with the present centerpiece. Around 1970, Art Vannes ceased production, leading to the establishment of Cristal de Vres; only from approximately 1980 onward were objects produced exclusively under the Daum name. Regardless of the various signatures and corporate transitions, the glass and crystal masterpieces of Vannes-le-Châtel remain an essential chapter in the history of 20th-century French decorative arts. The centerpiece is in excellent condition. Dimensions: diameter 22 cm (8.66 in); height 6 cm (2.36 in). See less
