Margherita caffi (cremona 1647 – milan 1710), workshop of
pair of flower still lifes
oval oil on canvas (41 x 33 cm - with antique frames 54 x 45 cm)
this pair of flower still lifes is attributed to an exponent of the lombard school of the second half of the 17th century, specifically to the workshop of margherita caffi (cremona 1647 – milan 1710). During this phase, which developed primarily in milan from the late 17th century onward, the compositions were characterized by extreme freedom of execution and a shift away from descriptive realism, favoring dramatic and chromatic effects.
both works feature a lush bouquet of flowers, executed with pictorial skill and meticulous attention to detail. They bring together a vast selection of flowers, including roses, anemones, tulips, and daffodils, characterized by a vibrant luminosity and highlighted by a dark background. The painting is characterized by an extreme freedom of brushstrokes, a weave of free and lively brushstrokes, typical of her style.
the painter was born in cremona in 1647, the daughter of the french-born painter vincenzo volò, active in lombardy in the 17th century. This family workshop, known as "dei vicenzini," established its style from the mid-17th century to the first quarter of the 18th century, strongly influencing the taste for still lifes among milanese collectors.
she later took her artistic surname when she married the cremonese painter ludovico caffi at a young age, where she may have completed her training.
she was also active in tuscany, where she worked and lived around the 1680s under the patronage of the medici family, favored by vittoria della rovere, wife of ferdinand ii. Renowned and sought-after throughout europe, her patrons included the archdukes of tyrol and the kings of spain.
toward the early 18th century, she moved permanently to milan, where she established a thriving workshop, a key player in the development of baroque still life in lombardy, successfully renewing its figurative repertoire to satisfy the tastes of late 17th-century milanese collectors.
