First generation … Read more Paw (pivot armchair wood base) chair in gray fiberglass, designed by charles & ray eames for herman miller. First generation production (known as generation 1.5 due to its checkerboard label) molded by herman miller in zeeland, michigan, circa 1950-1953. The shell features a perfectly visible fiberglass weave, typical of the early production years, and the original swivel mechanism bears the seng chicago marking.
the chair's frame is finished with a "rope edge" (hemp rope) finish, exclusive to the first editions by zenith plastics and herman miller. Its original sticker is still present and intact.
this version, uncommon on the market, features the sought-after configuration of a wooden base with black eiffel-style legs and the original swivel seat, a feature reserved for the earliest models and now extremely rare.
like the rar and paw (off-white) models with the zenith label that we also offer, this is an iconic, collector's item. Very good condition, smooth rotation.

sometimes referred to as "generation 1.5," certain fiberglass chairs bear the so-called "half-checkerboard" label.

this label appears primarily on the first-generation esu and edu models, but it is also occasionally found on "rope edge" armrest shells from the same period.

its use corresponds to the very beginning of the production of these shells and does not indicate any generational change or technical modification.

it is likely that it was used temporarily, possibly as a replacement for the usual full checkerboard label, as the application method remained the same. See less
