This area has been renowned for high-quality stoneware production since the early 19th century and remains home to one of France’s most important ceramic manufacturers (Novoceram). The piece features an elevated round form that is both original and refined. It was entirely hand-shaped using clay, metallic oxides, colorants, and fluxes combined with siliceous sands, then fired at high temperature (approximately 1200 °C) to achieve the distinctive vitrified surface typical of this material. Every stage of the process, from design to finished object, was overseen personally by its creators, ensuring exceptional artisanal quality. Porcelain stoneware is among the most prized ceramics, valued for its outstanding durability, strength, and aesthetic possibilities. Its production is technically demanding: during firing, the material undergoes approximately 13% volumetric shrinkage and fully vitrifies. If the artistic forms are not precisely conceived, the piece may not withstand the 1200 °C kiln. When successful, the artisan knows they have created something special—an object that will be appreciated and recognized for its value. With heart, mind, and hands, the artisans freed the material’s most intimate essence through water, earth, and fire, stripping away the superfluous to achieve the highest quality in every detail. On the underside of the centerpiece is an enigmatic, hand-incised marking, indecipherable yet likely meaningful to those who made the object.
