This authentic circa 1900 rowing oar blade is a rare and character-rich piece of sporting history, transformed into a striking and functional display object. Originally used in rowing crew sport, the blade retains its powerful, elongated form—instantly recognizable and deeply evocative of late 19th- and early 20th-century collegiate rowing traditions.
At the top, the oar is hand painted with the University of Cambridge coat of arms, a bold and prestigious emblem that speaks to one of the world’s most storied rowing programs. The painted heraldry, now beautifully timeworn, adds visual authority and historic gravitas, while the surface patina throughout reflects genuine age, use, and authenticity rather than decorative reproduction.
The blade has been thoughtfully adapted into a pipe rack, fitted with a series of small stepped shelves that run down its length. These shelves are ideal for displaying pipes, small collectibles, or personal treasures, blending utility with unmistakable narrative charm. The contrast between the darkened wood, painted accents, and warm-toned shelf elements creates a visually compelling vertical piece that draws the eye immediately.
Measures 32.75 inches high, 6.25 inches wide, and 2 inches deep. There is a brass mount at the top for wall hanging. Good antique condition with time worn paint and age-related wear/signs of handling. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Both sculptural and practical, this oar blade works exceptionally well as wall-mounted décor in a study, library, club room, or rowing enthusiast’s interior. It is especially suited to sporting, collegiate, nautical, or gentleman’s décor, where its provenance and craftsmanship can be fully appreciated.
A true conversation piece, this oar blade offers a tangible connection to historic rowing culture and academic tradition—an exceptional example of functional folk adaptation that preserves the soul of the original sporting object while giving it new life as a distinctive display.
