Carlos Luna (b. 1969) is a renowned Cuban-American contemporary artist known for his vibrant, semi-autobiographical paintings, sculptures, and jacquard tapestries that blend Cuban folklore, rural life ("guajiro" culture), and baroque sensibilities. Based in Miami since 2002, his work often features roosters, Orishas, and symbols of exile, reflecting his journey from Cuba to Mexico and the U.S. Born in Pinar del Río, Cuba, Luna studied at prestigious institutions like the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana before moving to Puebla, Mexico, in 1991.
While initially focusing on painting, he has expanded his practice to include ceramics, mosaics, and large-scale tapestry production with Magnolia Editions. His work often explores horror vacui (fear of empty space), using dense, intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and recurring figures like the "Rooster Man" or "El Guajiro" to reflect on personal memory, identity, and Cuban history.
In 2001, he received the EB-1 visa for "extraordinary ability" and moved to Miami. His art is featured in major collections, including El Museo del Barrio in New York and the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, California.
Luna has exhibited extensively across the U.S. and Mexico, with shows at the Bass Museum of Art and the American University Art Museum.
