Jean Michel Basquiat ( 1960 - 1988 ) was born in Brooklyn New York in 1960. His early creative career was as the Street Graffiti artist nick named " Samo " in the late 1970's on New York City's Lower East Side. By the early 1980's with the help of his friend Andy Warhol. Basquiat began to make his emotionally charged aesthetically arresting Neo Expressionist paintings. In 1992 The Whitney Museum of Art held a major retrospective exhibition of the life works of this great American Contemporary artist and master of social commentary.
His work focused on suggestive dichotomies such as wealth vs poverty, integration vs segregation, and inner vs outer experience of the human condition. He appropriated poetry, drawing, painting, and married text and image with Abstraction and Figuration. Basquiat's works has strong social commentary and deeper truths about the individual and the power structures of racism, and criticism of colonialism and support for class struggles.
The 2003 exhibition at The Musee Maillol in Paris brought together a major group of paintings that retraced the artist's pictorial career. The " Jean Michel Basquiat Paintings - The Story of an Oeuvre " exhibition presented nearly sixty paintings, some of them in monumental format. These artworks spanned the ten years during which the artist exercised his talent and were painted in a climate of urgency, as if he had a premonition of the brevity of his destiny, often placing himself on the narrow threshold between life and death. His personality, like the content of his work, seems to have encapsulated the experience of a generation who identify with the rebellion conveyed by his paintings. Basquiat's work in this exhibition illustrated him a s comet of Contemporary Art.
The artwork featured in this poster in a detail, " Dead Bird " 1985, is an acrylic, oil, and collage work on a panel attached to a wooden door, employing an unconventional surface. Exemplifying Basquiat's desire to integrate art with everyday life. It is a part of a series of works honoring Jazz legend musician Charlie " Bird " Parker, reflecting on mortality, fame, and Basquiat's own identification with his heroes. The symbolic imagery is a Memento Mori to saxophonist Charlie Parker, who Basquiat deeply admired in his fascination with Jazz Music.
