This Henri Matisse very rare vintage 1951 Mourlot fine art lithograph print " Madame De Pompadour " custom framed landmark French Mid Century Modernist Paris poster, is an incredibly special and unique piece to add to your collection.
The lithograph print poster is published by The Pavillon De Marsan Paris, printed in France in 1951 in an unnumbered limited edition of 1500 by Mourlot Imp. Paris, on the occasion of the " Bal De L'Ecole Des Arts Decoratifs " ( Annual Ball of The School o Decorative Arts ). It features an iconic artwork image created by Matisse titled " Madame De Pompadour ".
This is a rare opportunity for true Matisse and Modernism fans and collectors, as this coveted image fine art limited edition poster, considered by many to be one of the holy grails of Matisse art posters is long out of print and very scarce to find.
Matisse composed this magnificent design with paper cut-outs on which he later drew with the brush. The original was donated for the benefit of the alumni of The School of Decorative Arts. For Matisse, the artwork with the use of paper cut-outs represented the apotheosis of his work, bringing together drawing, color and sculpture.
Henri Matisse ( 1869 - 1954 ) the French born artist is known for both his sense of color and fluid aesthetic. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Picasso as one of the most important artists who helped to define and influence radical Contemporary Art of The 20th Century. His mastery of the expressive language of color and drawing won him recognition as a leading figure in world Modern Art. Artworks by Matisse are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
The venerable famous printing house of Imprimerie Mourlot Paris was founded in 1852 by The Mourlot Family. It is known worldwide for its fine art lithography printing, and one of their most important contributions was to be the art poster. Mourlot became the place where posters were prepared and produced as works of art in their own right.
This landmark fine art lithograph poster is from the collaboration and long lasting partnership between the artist Matisse and Atelier Mourlot who together would create many important art posters. An example of this same fine art poster is held in the archive collection of The Musee Des Arts Decoratifs Paris, The Smithsonian Institution, The Museum of Modern Art New York, and other prestigious museums worldwide.
In the 1930's Fernand Mourlot invited the major master artists of the time into the lithography studio to learn the medium of printing together. Encouraging the artists to work directly on the lithography plates to create original prints and posters in limited editions. The results of this artistic collaboration between master artists and Mourlot became internationally known for their originality, beauty, and exquisite craftsmanship.
Jeanne Antoinette Poisson, Marquise De Pompadour ( 1721 - 1764 ) commonly known as Madame De Pompadour, was a member of the French court. She was the official chief mistress of King Louis XV, and remained influential as a court favorite until her death. Pompadour was a major patron of architecture and decorative arts. She patronized the philosophies of The Enlightenment, including Voltaire. Criticized at the time for her political influence, but historians are more favorable emphasizing her successes as a patron of the arts and champion of French pride.
The Pavillon De Marsan built n the 1660's, sicne 1897 has been part of The Musee Des Arts Decoratifs. The Paris museum located in the city's 1st Arondissement, occupies The Pavillon DE Marsan. With approximately one million objects in its collection, it is the largest museum of decorative arts in continental Europe.
The rare out of print fine art lithograph print framed French Modernist poster measures 24 3/8" W X 32 1/4" H X 1 1/8" D. It is custom framed with UV protective plexiglass in a Contemporary Modern recessed beveled detailed matte eggshell finish black wood frame molding, with an attached hanging wire on the reverse back side for easy wall installation.
It is in excellent condition. The poster print is in excellent vintage condition consistent with age, use, light to moderate signs of handling, and some light to moderate visible surface wear. It is brand newly custom framed and has never been displayed. Please see photos for condition reference. It is now being offered here for an excellent price.
