Nature to form such a stone as this chunk of onyx, slowly through the precipitation of calcite crystals in groundwater across millions of years. Man to bring forth from the stone through carving and polishing such translucent layers veined with earthy-toned cream, grey, or soft brown hues, as offered here. Traditionally many of these pieces come from artisans in Mexico or Brazil. Freeform versions of onyx bowls, in this case a fluid “canoe” shape, often date to the late 20th century, while mid-20th-century pieces tend to have defined geometric shapes. Especially nice with the later work is that it sometimes retains "live" or rustic edges, exemplified in this bowl's wavy shape.
Somewhere in your living and dining space there’s a table just waiting for the added glamour of this piece. But drilled, it might also be used for a jewel-like sink in a powder room…just to get your imagination started.
